A MESSAGE FROM COACH WENDY

It’s almost fall, so let’s get excited about fiber!! What? My coach is talking about my digestion?

Okay, I get it. Fiber. Pooping. Not a sexy discussion topic, but a very essential element to our health.

Typically we only think about fiber when we have constipation, but fiber plays a much greater role beyond that. Sure, great for digestion to help ‘move things along,’ but fiber also helps us manage our weight and sugar levels which helps reduce the risk for diabetes, high cholesterol and heart disease, to name a few. So let’s get excited about fiber and its contribution to our health and longevity.

Found in plant-based foods like fresh fruits and veggies, fiber is also found in legumes (beans), and whole grains. Metamucil or other such supplements may help digestion, but nothing beats eating real foods that offer other nutrients our body needs every day. Add kidney beans or chick peas to your salads. Eat the whole apple, including the skin. Dip broccoli florets in hummus. Roast  brussel sprouts drizzled in olive oil with a little maple syrup. YUM! Or have a small handful of mixed nuts for a snack. You know what to do. Find what you like and eat it. Add a new item to expand your options to up your fiber content.

Lastly, to help you identify high-fiber foods and support your fiber knowledge (and hopefully your nutritional decisions!) check out the fiber cheat sheet and newsletter on the resources page. Enjoy September. Here’s to fiber for everyone!
