Be your OWN Valentine.
It’s February, a month most noted for celebrating Valentine’s Day by giving our special someone roses, chocolates, or heart-shaped treats, to name a few. Appropriately, February is also heart-health month, so let’s take a few things to heart.
A little organ about the size of our fist, our heart plays a vital role for us by pumping about 2,000 gallons of blood throughout the body and beating about 100,000 times every day. We should never take this magnificent organ for granted, and yet heart disease remains the leading cause of death. Worse yet, heart disease is preventable. Leading causes of heart disease include inactivity (sedentary lifestyle), diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, unhealthy eating habits, and smoking.
Don’t be a statistic. Let’s be our own best Valentine by taking care of our heart with quality nutrition choices including fresh and colorful fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, protein and low-fat dairy. Staying active three to five times per week (or more) with aerobic activity and strength training also plays a role in good heart health. The commitment we make today will contribute to a healthier and happier tomorrow.
So let’s be smart and take care of our heart!

motivation and inspiration.
