HAPPY NEW YEAR!

A MESSAGE FROM COACH WENDY

Time to make new year’s resolutions? Or maybe not.

I think new year’s resolutions are overrated. Not that we should ignore ways in which to continue to improve ourselves, but why so much pressure? I’ve never been a fan of making new year’s resolutions because they never seem to pan out. Sure, maybe one or two come through, but in the long run routinely they don’t. So how about we look to the new year as an opportunity. Let's see what we can accomplish rather than putting demands on ourselves. And even though it’s natural to reflect on the year past about what we did or didn't do, it will always be the action we take in the year ahead that will continue to make a bigger difference. For 2026 then, let’s move full speed ahead.

The term full speed ahead is actually an historic phrase that became famous after Admiral David Glasgow Farragut, who, during the Civil War, took big risks ordering his fleet to steam ahead even though he knew the waters were filled with mines. “Damn the torpedos, full speed ahead!” You can read the history behind it here.

Now, I’m not suggesting you forge ahead in a way that may put you in danger, but what I am suggesting is that you look to the new year with confidence. View the new year with enthusiasm.  For each task, errand, or workout, big or small, move forward with a positive outlook to be the best version of you that you can be for yourself and for others around you. I have said “full speed ahead” many times in the past (and still do) when encouraging someone to go after what they want or to pursue tasks with gusto, so if you hear me say this at the gym, now you’ll know what I am talking about.

And there you go. Damn the resolutions. Full Speed Ahead!
